Gourment & Wine Tours
Slovenia’s culinary skills and refined wine making make it stand out the most when comparing Slovenia to many other European countries, and all of these goodies are worth taking a closer look and bite at.
The culinary art of Slovenia is manifold and full of surprises. It enjoys all the attributes of the central European area mixed with the Mediterranean; the culinary heritage of the neighbouring countries (Italy, Austria, Hungary) and its own regional peculiarities. It is difficult, however, to pick out just one typical and unique Slovenian dish – there are many.
The concept of the classic Vienna school kept spreading through this country that used to be a part of Austro-Hungarian empire (for nearly 600 years!), especially among the upper middle class. From the other end, namely Italy, the abundance of Italian cuisine made its way into the land. At the same time, the people in the north-eastern parts of the country cling with devotion to the local flavour influenced by nearby Hungary. We should not ignore the influence of the sea and Mediterranean cuisine that has slowly progressed from the coast towards the central parts of the country. And the original home recipes are not to be forgotten either!
Slovenia 7 Days
Taste Slovenia’s very rich cuisine with all the attributes of the central European area mixed with the Mediterranean; the culinary heritage of the neighbouring countries (Italy, Austria, Hungary) and its own regional peculiarities.. As the landscape and cuisine are diverse, so are the wines: different regions, different wines, and all of them of superb quality.
Western Slovenia 7 Days
You will be surprised what can be offered within such a small territory. One day typical alpine cuisine with versatile game dishes, buckwheat specialities, different kinds of meat and delicious sausages. The next day you will enjoy the varieties of Venetian and Friulian cuisine in their delicious prosciutto, gnocchi and other kinds of pasta, and the coast’s excellent fish specialities. And not forgetting the top quality wines which are produced in the Primorsko region.
Eastern Slovenia 7 Days
The eastern part of Slovenia offers delicious meals, a variety of Viennese cuisine, mixed with Hungarian influences. A lot of grilled and dried meat specialities are offered, as well as different kinds of vegetables. The wines in this region are sweeter with stronger acidity and higher levels of sugar.
The Alps & The Kras
For the first two days you will enjoy different varieties of meat, served with sauerkraut and potatoes and perhaps specialities prepared from cottage and buckwheat. For the last two days the food will be influenced by the Mediterranean, meat is still the basis. But it tastes even better combined with Slovenia's unique “terran” wine.
Goriška Brda & The Kras
Goriška Brda is the culinary and wine cradle of Slovenia. Its perfect geographical position and unique climate create the perfect conditions for wine production. Each house has its own wine production, one better than another. The food is the same as the wines: delicious, not heavy, very aromatic. The Kras region is similar, only the food and wines are a bit heavier because of its sharper climate.
Primorska
This region has probably the richest culinary tradition in Slovenia: the influences of the heavy cuisine on the north and the delicious fish specialities of the coast. But excellent, sweet prosciutto can be found everywhere as well as different kinds of pasta and excellent wines. Those from Goriška Brda are of a top quality on a global level.
Štajerska & Prekmurje
Štajerska, Slovenia’s biggest wine growing region, has a lot to offer: excellent wines in combination with culinary specialities, influenced by the Viennese, Hungarian and Mediterranean. Meanwhile Prekmurje is close to Hungary, so the food is similar: spicier with excellent meat specialities, delicious bograč (potato goulash with different kinds of meat), other soup and surprisingly tasty cakes such as “gibanica” (a special tart filled with poppy seeds, apples and cream).
